This week’s Blue Light Special looked at U-turns.
U-turns can only be made at traffic lights if there is a U-TURN PERMITTED sign displayed.
If there is no sign then you cannot do a U-turn.
To do a U-turn with no sign would result in an $88 fine and a bonus two demerit points.
You also must NOT do a U-turn in the following scenarios:
- at an intersection without traffic lights if there is a NO U-TURN sign
- across a single continuous line
- across a double continuous line
- across a continuous line to the left of a broken line
- over a painted island in the centre of the road.
When making a legal U-turn you must ensure:
- that you have a clear view of approaching traffic
- that you do not obstruct the free movement of traffic
- that you give way to all pedestrians and vehicles (even if other vehicles are facing a give way or stop sign).
To see a video that covers all these scenarios head to the Transport and Main Roads website .
