This week’s Blue Light Special looked at level crossings.
If you picked answer 1 or 2, you were incorrect and have earned this week’s special of $330 and a bonus 3 demerit points.
Answer 3 is correct – you can enter a crossing if ‘the lights have ceased flashing and it is safe to do so’. The key point here is that you must not enter a level crossing while warning lights or bells are operating.
This does not mean that:
- you can proceed if the car before you (or from the opposite direction) goes through whilst the lights are still flashing
- you can drive around the end of lowered boom gates
- you treat a cane train crossing any differently to a major rail line.
Did you also know that you must not enter a level crossing while the road beyond is blocked? For example if traffic on Bourbong Street starts flowing again once a train has crossed, be careful of traffic suddenly coming to a standstill when the lights turn red at the Maryborough Street intersection. You might find yourself stuck on the crossing until the lights change!
