If you thought the green car facing the stop sign should give way then you answered incorrectly and just earned yourself this week’s Blue Light Special of a $330 fine and a bonus 3 demerit points.
This example shows that a STOP sign is not necessarily ‘more powerful’ than a GIVE WAY sign when giving way. In the image below, once the vehicles have given way to all other vehicles, they must then apply the give way rules to each other. The blue vehicle must give way to green vehicle because it is turning right, across the path of green vehicle.
For an animated video of this road rule visit the Department of Main Roads and Transport website.
This is probably a good time to remind ourselves of the definition of a stop sign. A STOP sign means that all wheels of your vehicle must come to a complete halt as near as practicable but before reaching the stop line painted on the road (or the stop sign if there is no painted line).
